I love Toronto in the summer, but I cant take the cold so I run back home. But I love Toronto, period, Baron said.
Many of Barons supporters have grown with him over the years; hes been present in spirit for holiday celebrations, romantic moments, childhood memories, big shows, family basement parties, and his voice has filled their homes and lives for decades. This calypso crooner, also dubbed the Sweet Soca Man can sing anything from traditional Trinidadian songs, to American classics.

Rikki Jai is ah Trinidadian chutney-soca artiste born Samraj Jaimungal in Friendship Village, San Fernando.
The prince of soca chutney, his highness Rikki Jai. Samraj "Rikki" Jai is the most successful crossover entertainer in the world. He has won the Carib Soca Chutney Monarch competition too many times to count, and has been the first Indian performer to make his mark on the soca charts with many different hit tunes. Most recently, he's known for his super hit throughout the soca and chutney universe for his song, Mor Tor. Mor Tor was almost a road march contender for the 2004 carnival season and was so popular that superstar Machel Montano also teamed up with his highness to remix the song.
Rikki Jai is also known for his past super chart topers like Scorpion, Dulahin, de River Lime and the song he broke into the scene with, Sumintra. Rikki Jai is unlike all other artists as he was the first to brake down the barrier, and allow space for 'Indian" soca entertainers to be recognized on the same stage as all the other top artists, although to this day no one has been able to reach the level at which Rikki has achieved success. None the less, he's still and always will be the true Prince of Soca Chutney music.

sugar Aloes-Born Michael Anthony Osuna, this controversial calypsonian hails from Santa Cruz, Trinid...
sugar Aloes-Born Michael Anthony Osuna, this controversial calypsonian hails from Santa Cruz, Trinidad. He started his schooling at Nelson Street Boys R.C. then went on to Mucurapo High School. One of his earliest mentors was Hollis Liverpool, better known as the Mighty Chalkdust. Chalky was Michaels schoolteacher then later his choirmaster at Nelson Street Boys. Michael Osuna began his singing career in 1979 at the Young Beginners Tent. He now lives in Arouca and is married, describing himself as a family man.
Facts and figures are cold things however. They cannot begin to describe the man, his life and his art. Michael is best known to his friends, fans and foes as Sugar Aloes. He is the reigning 2002 Calypso Monarch of Trinidad and Tobago.
From the moment he took the stage at the Grand Savannah on the night of Dimarche Gras 2002 he was a crowd favourite. His first song "Contribution" told of our need and responsibility to mentor and shape our children, heart, body and soul. I caught up with Sugar Aloes one evening, several weeks after his resounding victory. He was doing back to back performances in New York then on to another full slate of appearances in Toronto, Canada.
Aloes and I spoke of the continuing trend of West Indian parents to come abroad seeking a better life while leaving their children behind. "How can you mind your child from a barrel?" says Aloes. "You cant pack morals in a barrel to send home. You cant pack values in a barrel. No matter where I am, or what Im doing, I make time for my children."
There is an ever-increasing flow of West Indians leaving their home for the mythical milk and honey advertised in foreign lands. Sugar Aloes made himself very clear on his position, saying "If you cant make it where you born, you cant make it anywhere. Youre going from job to job here. Whats the difference?" The breakdown in family is a source of heartfelt distress to Aloes and he vows to continue the lyrical laments to his nation.
Sugar Aloes second song on the night of his resounding victory was "Jubilation Time" (chorus: please Mr. Panday, make way for de Balisier) a well-received tribute to the PNM (Peoples National Movement)s return to political power in Trinidad and Tobago. The Balisier is the icon flower of the PNM. "Jubilation Time" bore the style of the late Lord Kitchener, a hero of the 2002 Monarch. The calypso was done in a larveau (pronounced lav whey) cadence, a simple but time honoured melody of the art of political commentary in song.
But there is a method to the bittersweet madness. Sugar Aloes life is predicated on certain fundamental beliefs and the facts and figures begin to pale in the revealing light of these convictions. Aloes and I joked a bit as we talked about his family life and childhood. He told me hed prefer not to mention how many children he has. He laughed and said, "People tended to react with "Oh goooode!" But there was no joking when we spoke on the topic of his music and his lyrics. His insightful grasp of life in Trinidad & Tobago came through clearly as we talked about where he saw himself in years to come, what his calypso commentaries meant to him and more especially, what it meant to his people.
"I am a vicious commentator." He said. "The poor mans representative. We continue to be misled and Im not going to stay quiet about it." Aloes went on to explain that the poor man had a voice only once every five years and he has taken it upon himself to speak out on his behalf on the injustices and unfair practices of those in authority. While some of his fellow calypsonians may pander solely to the bump and grind of popular soca rhythms, Sugar Aloes plans on keeping his calypsos on task, tough and unwavering in his passion for improvement in the socio-political and economic situation in Trinidad and Tobago. A staunch PNM advocate, Sugar Aloes promises his words will always be controversial but there will never be a question as to his loyalties and sense of responsibility to his homeland.

Mighty Sparrow or Birdie (born Slinger Francisco, July 9, 1935, in Grandroy Bay, Grenada, West indies) is a calypso singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Known as the "Calypso King of the World," he is one of the most well-known and successful calypsonians. He has won Trinidad's Carnival Road March competition nine times and has been named Calypso Monarch eight times.
Sparrow moved to Trinidad when he was one year old. He was first exposed to music through the choir in Catholic school, and became interested in calypso at 14 when he joined a steel band composed of neighborhood boys. He received his performing name during his early career:
Your calypso name is given to you by your peers, based on your style. In the old days they tried to emulate British royalty. There was Lord Kitchener, Lord Nelson, Duke. When I started singing, the bands were still using acoustic instruments and the singers would stand flat footed, making a point or accusing someone in the crowd with the pointing of a finger, but mostly they stood motionless. When I sing, I get excited and move around, much like James Brown, and this was new to them. The older singers said "Why don't you just sing instead of moving around like a little Sparrow." It was said as a joke, but the name stuck. -Mighty Sparrow

Ragga born Ian Joseph, a native of Trinidad & Tobago, came to New York in 1984 . He first experienced the ambiance of show business at age 7 while performing in school concerts and local competitions, and by age 12, he was performing with some of the top Soca acts in Trinidad & Tobago. At that time his mother, who was a member of the band Shorty and the Brass Circle, one of the best bands in Trinidad, realized his extraordinary talent. So she packed their bags, and headed for New York. Once settled, Ian started attending his mothers recording sessions and would just naturally start singing along. Soon the leader of the band asked him to join in, and the rest is history. Ever since, Ragga has been on stage here in the United States with many different bands, and have performed with some of the top Caribbean band acts in the [U.S.A]; such as Shaggy, Rupee, Maxi Priest, David Rudder and many more. He also was one of the winners of the Caribbean amateur night at the Apollo theater. His powerful, captivating voice and magnetic stage presence made him one of the many artists that you could always enjoy. In 2004, he got together with Otis Music and wrote the number one hit song called Right Up In Dey. It became the top song at Miami Carnival that year.then followed up with miss lady In 2006,which he won best new Groovy Artist of the year at the International Soca Music Awards.
An avid writer and arranger of his own material, Raggas major goal is to get his songs, a cartel of Soca mixed with R&B, and Reggae heard by the music industry and especially the American audiences so they can feel what we in the Caribbean feel. This extremely talented gentleman is destined to become a major part of todays music scene as he always says Tell dem Ragga say so!

Aldwyn Roberts (Lord Kitchener)
Lord Kitchener (1922-2000) was known as the "Grandmaster" of calypso. By the time of his death, only the Mighty Sparrow and the Roaring Lion had reached a similar level of respect. For over a half century, he was widely admired for his musicianship, compositions, performance ability and overall support for the calypso tradition. On 10 occasions, he won the "Road March" title—the award for the calypsonian whose song is most frequently played on the streets during Trinidad's Carnival.
Kitchener began performing calypsos in the Trinidadian town of Arima in the late 1930s. By the 1940s, he was appearing in Port of Spain. In 1946 he helped to organize the Young Brigade tent, which featured a new generation of calypso singers, and was applauded for his calypso "Tie Tongue Mopsy." After the 1947 Carnival season, Kitchener traveled to Aruba, Curacao and Jamaica. In 1948 he left Jamaica on the Empire Windrush, a ship that marked the beginning of large-scale Caribbean migration to Britain. Kitchener remained in England, where he had an active career that included extensive recording for the Parlophone, Melodisc and Lyragon labels. His records were exported in large quantities to the Caribbean, where he remained popular. Some of his records were also popular in West Africa.
Kitchener returned to Trinidad for the 1963 Carnival and formed the Calypso Revue, which continued as a major tent. Through this tent, he helped many young singers develop their calypso skills. For decades, Kitchener remained a favorite calypsonian among steelbands, due to the catchy melodies and harmonic complexity of his compositions. Among his many well-known calypsos are "Trouble in Arima," "Mama Dis Is Mas," "My Pussin'" and "Pan in A Minor."
Sugar Bum Bum -- Lord Kitchener
Audrey, where you get that sugar
Darling there is nothing sweeter
You make me scream, you make me bawl
You make me feel like ten foot tall
Sugar bum, sugar bum-bum (repeat 3x)
Audrey, everytime you wiggle
Darling, you put me in trouble
You torture me, the way you wine
I love to see your fat behind
Sugar bum, sugar bum-bum (repeat 3x)
Darling, I don't want to lose you
Honey, like you give me voodoo
Give way me land, give way me car
But let no man touch my sugar
Sugar bum, sugar bum-bum (repeat 3x)
Give me the bum-bum, Audrey
Oh oh oh
Give me the bum-bum, Audrey
Give me the bum-bum, Audrey
Honey the bum-bum, Audrey
Sugar bum, sugar bum-bum (repeat 3x)

BRAND NEW song by Shaggy n Alison Hinds the mash up riddim,
Shaggy is the name of, at least, two artists.
1, Shaggy (born October 22, 1968, in Kingston, Jamaica as Orville Richard Burrell), is a Jamaican reggae artist who takes his nickname from Scooby-Doos companion (possibly from the similarity of their first names). He is especially notable for his distinctive sub-baritone voice.
His family immigrated to the United States and they settled in the neighborhood of Flatbush, Brooklyn, located in New York City, New York, USA.
In 1988, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served during Operation Desert Storm during the Persian Gulf War.
Born in England, ALISON and her mom moved to Barbados when she was 11 years old. After graduating from high school ALISON joined Square One, a Soca band made up of long time friends. Square One toured non-stop, playing everywhere from bars, hotels and eventually bigger venues throughout the Caribbean. ALISONs first hit with Square One was 1996s Ragamuffin, which won the Road March during the Barbados Carnival. The next year she repeated that victory as well as winning The Party Monarch, with "Twister"; making her the first woman in Barbados to capture both titles. ALISON recorded eleven albums with the band, including their debut Full Bloom. The CD was huge internationally and featured the 1 single "Faluma. Square One was at the peak of their popularity and so was ALISON, who was increasingly in demand also as a solo act.
In 2004, after getting married and having a daughter, ALISON decided to take a temporary leave from a grueling six years on the road. The break allowed ALISON to see her career in a new light and soon realized that going solo would be a good creative move that allowed her to determine own schedule.
Eighteen months after her hiatus, ALISON went solo and was instantly embraced by her fans, enabling her to take her dynamic live show worldwide, touring throughout the U.S., Europe, Canada and the Caribbean. The immediate acceptance confirmed ALISONs belief that her decision was fated and what she was destined to achieve. So too was the recording of her first solo CD. Everything I have done has been working towards this. To have the opportunity to make my own album and bring my music to my fans without watering down my sound or compromising what I am or SOCA is. Nothing makes me happier as an artist to know that I am bringing joy to new fans all over the world.

JMC TRIVENI - CATCH MEH LOVAH - Sunita (New Song )
Jmc 3veni was founded in the year 1977, as a local East-Indian oriented band. They played full East Indian Music focusing on film songs, playback etc. Within a few years of existence, Jmc 3veni had captivated the hearts of many Indo-Trinidadians with their music.
The year 1987 was a major turning point for the band, as they, for the first time, ventured into the Soca/Calypso arena, playing on the road and being awarded 2nd best sounding band for Mas Band Rabs Immortal. It was then and there, Jmc 3veni was dubbed the premier Crossover band out of Trinidad & Tobago, becoming the band of choice for many popular Carnival Mas Bands including; Show Case, Raoul Garib, Max Awon D Midas and Associates, and for the past 11 years, 3 time Band of the Year winners Trini Revellers.
Jmc 3veni, worked diligently to promote the Music and Culture of Trinidad & Tobago internationally over the past years, travelling to North America, South America, & Europe annually. In doing so, theyve managed to attain many merits to their name, including;
•Sunshine Award winners, 4 consecutive years
•Indo Caribbean & TnT Awards, 3 consecutive years
•Awards at the 103 Fm Annual Hall of Fame Awards
•Best Crossover Band, The International Soca Awards at the Apollo Centre, New York
•Crossover Song of the Year 2006 Doi Festival, The Cott Awards, Trinidad
•The Opportunity to perform for former mayor Rudolf Juliani, 4 consecutive years
•4 time winners of the Best Sounding Band, Downtown Carnival Trinidad, including the year 2009
Jmc 3veni is presently preparing for Carnival 2010, with their latest crossover hit Catch Meh Lover, as well as many other crossover and soca selections. Although being a premier band for many of the Carnival fetes and All-Inclusive parties, the band plays a major role in all of the Chutney Soca events throughout the season, including The Chutney Soca Monarch, Chutney Glow, Chutney Brass, etc. Jmc 3veni continues to work vigorously to hold the title of the Best Crossover Band out of Trinidad & Tobago.

Fay-Ann triumphs at Soca Monarch
Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez made history on Friday night at the National Stadium as she became the first woman to win the Soca Monarch, Groovy Soca Monarch and the bmobile Peoples Choice.
Singing in position No 7 in the Groovy Soca Monarch competition, Lyons-Alvarez danced onto the stage dressed as a Dame Lorraine to render her popular Heavy T Bumper and just worked the song.
During the performance she brought on contestants from the Miss Big and Beautiful Competition as well as the renowned Calypso Rose.
The crowd was moved. She paid special respect to the queen of calypso by inviting the entire crowd at the Hasely Crawford Stadium to sing to Rose before commanding them to wine their bumpers. Rose took full advantage of that and sent the crowd wild. It was an impregnable performance.
In the Power Soca Monarch Lyons-Alvarez, dressed in black and blue, belted out her song Meet Superblue as she again paid tribute, this time to her father, Austin Superblue Lyons who danced around on the stage next to his daughter, hugging and kissing her as she performed.
She then sent the crowd in a frenzy when she introduced them to her baby by putting the microphone to her belly and a child-like voice singing a verse to her song was heard.
After that, it was quite clear that she had the support of everyone in the venue as they chanted Fay-Ann, Fay-Ann in unison for over five minutes, demanding an encore.
Defending champion Bunji Garlin, who placed second, showed support for his wife when he told the audience during his performance he was only there to have fun and to ensure that Iwer George placed third as his wife was already the winner of the night.
Iwer George who came out in a red suit finished off with a red bow tie, performed his song Ready with a stunning stage presentation complete with dancers and large costumes, earning him third place in the competition. Rain threatened to interrupt the show during the Power Soca Monarch segment of the competition but it did not stop Blaxx from giving his all as he performed Tusty and captured fourth place.
Last years Groovy Soca Monarch winner, Shurwayne Winchester placed second in that category with his powerful performance of his song Make it Yours with the help of international reggae artiste Maxi Priest.
Also impressing the large crowd and the judges was Benjai, who sang Drunk Again without any large stage presentation.
He came in third in the Groovy Soca Monarch followed by fourth placed Zoelah from St Vincent who sang Wine Up on Me with the help of sexy male dancers, much to the delight of the female audience.
Hunter, who performed his big hit Jep Sting sent the crowd wild when he introduced his fellow artistes, Anil Bheem, Drupatee and Ravi B to sing with him.
Earlier, the show once again started an hour late despite the assurances that things would be different this year. The promised 1 am finish time never came true as the show continued until after 3 am in the morning.

Edwin Yearwood is a natural born entertainer whose accolades and songwriting genius establish him as the undisputed Soca King.
Yearwood, or as his band mates affectionately call him, "General", is a mighty talent. His intimate relationship with melodies and lyrics manifests itself in a creation of hit songs that are not only the very essence of krosfyah, but music that has rocked the hips and soothed the souls of krosfyah supporters worldwide.
From the painfully shy youth who would sing from behind the drum set, to a "Superstar" who can simply utter "Oh gawsh!" and turn a whole stadium into an uproar, Edwin is a prodigy with more than his fair share of talent.
One of the regions hottest vocalists and songwriters, his career started at the tender age of 14, when he won a talent show on his first try. He had the audience spellbound and in tears as he rendered Billy Prestons "You Are Everything To Me". Since then, Edwin has been captivating audiences with his unique vocal styling to Soca music, capturing international attention and collecting awards all too numerous to mention.
In 1995, again on his first try, he won all three titles on the Barbados carnival scene- 1995 Calypso Monarch, 1995 Party Monarch (repeated in 1996 and 2004) and 1995 Tune of the Crop Monarch (repeated in 1997).
In 1996, he was honored by the city of Boston when he was awarded the keys to the city by the Mayors office.
In 1997, Trinidad bestowed on him one of their highest music honors, giving him the award of Best Song for the smash hit "All Aboard", performed by a Trinidadian band.
One of his most recent major international achievements has been winning the "World Soca Monarch Title" from a field of the best soca artists worldwide.
At the 2001 Kadooment Festival in Barbados, Edwin doubled with Khiomal Nurse also of krosfyah and made history in Barbados by winning the Road March title with a slow jam entitled "Sak Pase".
2002 was another memorable year with the monster hit Road Jam. Which served as the party anthem of the year, trapping in our heads that infectious line I Feel Like Wukkin Up.
Edwin is the sexy, charismatic lead singer of krosfyah. He is happiest when on stage and has the ability to communicate music from his soul; an ability he uses in a magical way to reach the very core of his audience.
