Neeshan D Hitman Prabhoo
- Whole Day liming
Neeshan Prabhoo has been slowly rising over the last five years. This year, the 30-year-old from Todds Roads, Central, takes aim at the crown with Whole Day liming, a song that is also called trouble. Trudy Parboo, his publicist, said the song was written by Prabhoo and speaks about a man liming all day and decides to run away from stress after a family argument. Parboo said DHitman has been to the finals in 2008 with Drunk and Married, a song he recorded with Dile-e-Nadan.
DHitman also appeared on the big stage in 2005 and 2007. Doh Hold Me Back was his first chutney song that was recorded in 1997. Prabhoo took a break from singing and recorded his most sought-after tune, More Rum For Me, better known as Listen Mr Shanka in 2004.

Rikki Jai is ah Trinidadian chutney-soca artiste born Samraj Jaimungal in Friendship Village, San Fernando.
The prince of soca chutney, his highness Rikki Jai. Samraj "Rikki" Jai is the most successful crossover entertainer in the world. He has won the Carib Soca Chutney Monarch competition too many times to count, and has been the first Indian performer to make his mark on the soca charts with many different hit tunes. Most recently, he's known for his super hit throughout the soca and chutney universe for his song, Mor Tor. Mor Tor was almost a road march contender for the 2004 carnival season and was so popular that superstar Machel Montano also teamed up with his highness to remix the song.
Rikki Jai is also known for his past super chart topers like Scorpion, Dulahin, de River Lime and the song he broke into the scene with, Sumintra. Rikki Jai is unlike all other artists as he was the first to brake down the barrier, and allow space for 'Indian" soca entertainers to be recognized on the same stage as all the other top artists, although to this day no one has been able to reach the level at which Rikki has achieved success. None the less, he's still and always will be the true Prince of Soca Chutney music.

Slinger Francisco was born in the village of Grand Roy, Grenada. He moved to Trinidad at an early age. He began singing calypso in the early 1950's adapting the calypso nickname Mighty Sparrow.
He earned his under whelming nickname (most calypso singers dealt in more self-aggrandizing names such as Executor and Lion) by virtue of his stage performances, which involved him moving around rapidly while most other singers were stationary.
Sparrow was rewarded with the Calypso Crown of 1956 for his song "Jean And Dinah", which protested about the fallout from Americans who had left Trinidad's military bases. At the same time he lent his support to Eric Williams' People's National Movement, writing many calypso songs in praise of the nationalist leader.
His anthem "Cricket Lovely Cricket" was a particularly painful reminder to UK cricket fans after the humiliating drubbing West Indian star batsman Garfield Sobers gave to the English team in the early 50s. In politics, however, he subsequently revised his position in the 60s as the initial optimism of the PNP soured into disillusionment. Despite his earlier recordings, calypso was ironically just beginning to secure a large following in the USA.
Sparrow's popularity was such that in the 50s and 60s he was capable of filling a venue such as New York's Madison Square Gardens. With the development of soca, Sparrow became a willing convert, although he faced some opposition from calypso purists who despised the new hybrid.
Sparrow's achievement over the years was attained by much hard work, study, due diligence, and the ability to make his music as relevant as possible to his audience worldwide. Early in his career, he listened carefully, and understood the essential elements of the works of the top Calypsonians of the time in order to determine where he wanted Calypso, as an art form, to go. The earthy style of Lord Melody, who eventually became Sparrow's favorite Calypsonian and close friends, attracted him as did Lord Kitchener's ability to please both Trinidadians as well as the international audience. From music books, Sparrow taught himself to play the guitar. Going one step further from learning all the tunes of the reigning Calypsonians' work by heart, early in his career, he tried his hand at composing and, in 1954, he made his Calypso Tent debut as a professional at the Old Brigade Tent on South Quay, Port of Spain. There, he used the sobriquet Little Sparrow. He enthralled the demanding T&T Calypso Tent audience with his composition

She was then given the task amongst other top local young artistes to judge for the competition. This was done for two years.
She went on to successfully complete her studies at her High School with distinctions in English Language subjects. She continued her education upliftment by assigning herself to a number of studies, mainly computer literacy. Nisha does a variety of songs, ranging from Indian to English Soca to Reggae and even a little bit of Rock. She says she loves versatility but with it comes sincere devotion and sometimes even hard work.

She toured the US and thrilled audiences with her ability to 'change her voice' in accordance of a particular song. Nisha also works in collaboration with Pretangeli's, where the ads are either written or performed by her. Nisha is the only solo female singer at present in the band.

DJ PHAZE - Radica .De Hoe
Radica Paraboo
When Kenneth Salick went down on his knees at Skinner Park, San Fernando, and poured his heart out, the subject of his love, Radica Paraboo, was watching him on television.
"I cried," she said in an interview on Monday.
She said he reminded her of the young man who courted her in the village where they both lived.
Salick, who composed the song "Radica" when she walked out of his life 16 years ago, took the Chutney Soca Monarch crown valued at $200,000 with a powerful rendition of the song during the finals held at Skinner Park, San Fernando, on Saturday night.
Though separated, the couple share a love that has endured from childhood through the years.
Radica said she had only good wishes for Salick and is "really happy for him".
She said, "I saw him while he was coming home after winning the competition but we did not get a chance to talk."
The two fell in love during childhood. Radica recalled that Salick "used to ride his bicycle up and down the road and we began talking to each other".
Salick summoned the courage to visit the Paraboo family and meet her grandfather. The teenager was pregnant at 17 and went to live with Salick. In the years that followed she gave birth to seven children.
She said she left because Salick was involved with another woman.
He took the children and moved to Eastern Main Road, Sangre Chiquito.
Left alone, Radica, 40, entered a relationship and had two other children while Salick fathered another child with the new woman in his life.
They are both single again and they both live separately in the same village at Melau, Vega de Oropouche, Sangre Grande.
Since the release of the song "Radica", there have been two replies in the chutney soca arena.
Brandstec singer, Rawytee Ramroop, sang an Asha Gajadhar composition saying, "Since I left you, I am so happy. You didn't say how you ill treat me, I had to leave."
Gayatones singer Devika Ram's reply titled "Wrong Name" suggested that Salick called her Radica instead of Devika and "that was why I went to Tobago."
They were both wrong.
Celebrations are in order and the Salicks are rejoicing. Radica Paraboo included!
Kenneth Salick said ---
First love is hard to forget, or so the saying goes.
It certainly wins the day for the chutney soca couple who, after 16 years of separation, continue to nurture warm feeling for each other, they said.
Radica Paraboo, who inspired her forlorn ex-husband to pen the song that won him the Chutney Soca Monarch title this year, will share in the $200,000 prize money.
Suddenly a celebrity, Kenneth Salick said he will share the prize with the mother of his seven children.
"I want to give she something," he said yesterday. "Ah doh know how much it going to be as yet."
Salick, 46, of Eastern Main Road, Sangre Grande, wrote the song after Paraboo left him in 1993.
"Is because of her I wrote the song and she deserve to share in the prize," he said.
He took the title from ten finalists at Skinner Park, San Fernando, last Saturday night, when the public gave him 11,625 text votes to win.
Meantime, fame is opening doors for him.
Salick has applied for a passport and will travel abroad as soon as Carnival is over to perform with Dil-e-Nadan. And he continues to perform nightly at venues across the country.
Growing up in Sangre Grande, Salick began singing 20 years ago with the Sangeet Stars Orchestra and joined several bands over the years. In 2000, he recorded his first song, "We Are One", followed by "Ram, Sita Ram". So far, he has recorded 15 songs with Zaheer "Big Rich" Khan at the Pungalunks factory in Couva and three with the Gayatones orchestra.
His songs include "A Woman in Meh Village", "Hard Wine", "The Bamboo", "Coalpot", "Tune de Thing", and others.
With a tour of the US in the works, Salick said he hopes to stay in the limelight for a long time. He has composed over 100 songs and has a CD on sale.
"The first thing I want to do with the prize money is to buy a house," he said.
Paraboo said she will use whatever money she is given by her ex-lover to buy a small house. She lives in a rented apartment and receives a monthly public assistance cheque.

Also Salima Mohammed of Dam Dama Dam fame and also artists from New York, India and Jamaica. He has already performed in New York, Toronto, Montreal, Jamaica, Miami, Orlando etc.
Helped in the arrangement of the Saaj Sameelan composition, entitled Dostana which was composed by his father, Mr. Ramnarine 'Tole' Moonilal, leader of the Dil-E-Nadann Indian Orchestra. Sang on Indian Variety and was a finalist on Mastana Bahar. Rennie has just returned from a successful tour of the USA - New York, Miami and Orlando. He as also just released a brand new cassette 'New Image'.
The music was done and some songs rearranged by Raymond, Richard and Rennie himself. The songs were selected by Rennie's father and mother.
Rennie currently plays rhythm, lead guitar and bass guitar and is also one of the lead singers with the Dil-E-Nadaan Indian Orchestra of Gasparillo. He plans to further his studies, academically and also in music and with his singing. He is very grateful to his parents for the guidance, encouragement, support, love and understandings. Richard Ramnarine
Meet the baby of the talented Ramnarine family - Richard. Just like his illustrious brothers Raymond and Rennie - musician - singer and oh-well the girls go berserk for him.
Richard joined the band in 1990 as a Dholak and Tabla player. He received formal training from Roby Rooplal for about one year. In 1993 he expanded his role to include all percussion instruments and the rhythm machine. Richard is a player of the nineties synchronizing the eastern and western rhythms with such ease and perfection.
Elder brother Raymond remembers heckling Richard that he should follow his brothers not only as musicians but he should take up singing and he did - but fully aware of the standards set by his brothers used to hide and rehearse, in fact he made his public debut in 1995 at the annual Valentine Spectacular singing behind his instruments still shy but very effective.
In 1998 at Queens Hall and Union Park Complex, Richard for the first time took the microphone and sang at the front of the Band.
He is an important link in the Dil-E-Nadaan Orchestra. His mission id to expand his capabilities, with the help of Raymond and Rennie with the keyboards and guitars. His idols not unexpectedly are his father who he adores and brothers Raymond and Rennie who he credits with teaching him all he knows. He proposes also to pursue courses in computer technology which he hopes to incorporate within the band.
Richard today handles the arrangements of the band for their many engagements including Tours.

The accomplished singer and music director Ravi Bissembhar is hip and happening for Carnival 2K9 as he is very much in demand with his song Dularie. The handsome young singer has taken the second place at the recent Chutney Soca Monarch competition, winning $100,000. Commenting on his win he said, This is really the peak of my career as a performer. There are no words to describe the feeling of performing in competition before such a mammoth crowd. As one of the lead singers with the band Karma, Ravi has been travelling extensively throughout 2008 and returned for the festive season in December of last year. Having grown up amidst orchestra music, where his father Jeewanlal Bissembhar was one of the leaders of the Indian Art Orchestra, he has had first- hand knowledge of the music. It is in my blood and I could not escape it even if I tried, he said.
According to Ravi, he knew it was a very demanding job and he thought about getting into another profession that would take him to different countries but it was a calling and he found himself learning the keyboards at the tender age of 12. He was later asked to do back-up singing for the main singers and he obliged as he was ready to take the music to a higher level in the country. Soon he was singing his own songs. I had the voice, the experience and the musical skill so I was naturally into the music industry. says Ravi. He remains perhaps the youngest musical producer, director, arranger, singer and one of the most sought after musical programmer in the country. We in Trinidad are a unique people. We get to appreciate the music from India and from the west. We can mix and remix and people will love us for it, he said.
He is also inspired by his brother Anil, sisters Nalini and Nisha. Ravi has toured the Caribbean, USA, Canada, Guyana, Europe and Suriname. He is known for doing calypso, R&B and pop songs as part of his wide-ranging repertoire. There are love songs coming out of Hollywood that people really love and there are love songs coming out of Bollywood that fans go crazy for. I am just lucky that I can do these songs for the people, he said.
The artiste notes that while he has to spend more than 12 hours a day preparing for the stage, it is rewarding to see how people respond to him on stage. He made waves with his big hit songs, Gul Yuh Start Meh, Rum is Meh Lover and Teer Cheer. Other hit songs include, Karma Slam1&2, Yeh Kahan, Mom and Dad, Badi Door, Seene Meh Dil, Ek Teira Saath, Karma Rompe, Channa Vey and his version of Mangalam Ganesham.
Some of his greatest achievements include performing alongside Nitin Mukesh in 1996 and Shah Rukh Khan in 1999. He said one of his achievements was in joining the 90.5 FM family in 2002 which gave him the opportunity to play music for Kumar Sanu at the 90.5 FM cook out competition in 2004. In December of 2005 he was chosen to open the Bollywood Music Awards. Since its inauguration Karma has produce six albums, Evolution, ABC (Another Bad Creation), Party Mix, Secret 48, Karma Mangalam, Destiny and Karmasutra.
Ravi spoke about his father, Jeewanlal, who died last year, noting that he started out as a vocalist but went on to master the art of bass guitar as well. Over the years he has become known to the Indian music industry as the only singer this side of the Caribbean to have the closest sounding voice to Jagjit Singh.
My father was a humble individual who had a lot of courage and strength as he weathered all the storms in his silent way. He was never one to argue with anyone and I think I have learnt to have patience and be strong when things go wrong in life, he said, adding that there were many instances when things did go wrong.
Ravi is also very proud of his sister Nisha who has been the main act in the band Karma as they continue to deliver their best music and songs for the local fans and those in foreign countries. In 1999, she released The Scorpion, a song that was voted one of the most popular songs of all time. Some time after, together with brothers Anil and Ravi, the band Karma was formed.
