SPIN magazine listed Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as one of the 50 most influential artists of music in 1998. Nusrat wascalled "Shahenshah-e-Qawwali" (The Emperor of Qawwali). His father, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan and his paternal uncles Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan, and Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, who were distinguished and legendary musicologists, vocalists and instrumentalists, trained his young son, Nusrat, who was more interested in music than becoming an engineer or a doctor. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan became popular in Europe and the USA when worked with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack to "The Last Temptation of Christ" in 1985, and with the Canadian musician, Michael Brook, on the albums "Mustt Mustt" in 1990, and the "Night Song" in 1996, reaching millions around the world. "Mustt Mustt" and "Dam Mast Qalandar" were also copied and featured in Bollywood films. He also worked with Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder in 1995 on two songs for the soundtrack to "Dead Man Walking," and contributed to the soundtrack of "Natural Born Killers". According to the "Guinness Book of World Records", Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan holds the world record for the largest recorded output by a Qawwali artist—a total of 125 albums as of 2001. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Nusrat had a six-octave vocal range and could perform at a high-level of intensity for several hours, often lasting an hour or more. Shortly before his 1997 death (only a few days before British Princess Diana died or was killed in a car "accident" in Paris, France), he recorded a song each for two Bollywood films, "Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya" (in which he also appeared) and "Kachche Dhaage". Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is responsible for the modern evolution of Qawwali. He popularised the blending of "khayal" singing and techniques with Qawwali. He blended Qawwali music with western styles such as electronic music, inspiring thousands of singers and musicians around the world. His millions of fans around the world included: British Princess Diana, cricketer Imran Khan, the late American rock singer Jeff Buckley; Eddie Vedder; Paul Williams; percussionist Brook Martinez; The Red Hot Chili Peppers; The Derek Trucks Band; Giuseppe Asaro, etc. According to one of his fans: His "music invites us to eavesdrop on a man communing with his God, ever so eloquently. He makes the act of singing a passionate offering to God. But we do not merely eavesdrop. Mera Gaon Mera Desh is a 1971 Indian film made by Raj Khosla, starring Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna as the villain.As a bandit, Vinod Khanna's role gave him visibility and made him a star. Dharmendra plays a reformed criminal who helps a one armed retired army man protect a village from the dacoits. Asha Parekh played Dharmendra's love interest.
However, it was supporting actress Laxmi Chayya who stole the film by dancing circles around Dharmendra and Asha to the evergreen hit "Maar diya jaaye ya chhod diya jaaye, bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye". As the audience holds its collective breath, the sexy vamp cuts the ropes that bind the hero's hands after she has drugged the villains.
The film is particularly noted for a rural setting, and it became a super hit, taking second place at the box office for 1971. It is also said to have many elements that inspired one of the box office champs of all time, Sholay(1975).The climax fights are still remembered for the realism and are very convincing although a single man is fighting a horde of bandits.
