richard Luces ..Caribbean Christmas music Steel drum, or "pan", is considered (at least in Trinidad and Tobago) to be the only real musical instrument invented in the 20th century. It has come a long way in less than a century. From the marginalized means of expression of the marginalized social classes, it has hit the mainstream. These two albums illustrate that perfectly.
Tropical Sunday by richard Luces, a Trinidadian living in Canada, blends keyboard and pan. The selections range from Schubert to spirituals to Bony M to Soeur Sourire. The arrangements are all true to the originals, but you can hear the pan. Its sound unites the pieces, but without making them homogenous.
The works on this CD are all inspirational, though I admit that I had to stretch my imagination to see where "Every Breath You Take" fits in. (Hint: Pretend it's God singing it.)
Voices 'n Steel unites two of Trinidad and Tobago's most famous groups: a renowned choir and a celebrated steel band. The pieces are almost all classical. If you don't look at the CD first, you'd never know from accent or tone where the artists were from.
Voices 'n Steel shows the versatility of pan. The All Stars are an orchestra, not a band, and they sound like any other orchestra. An expert can make a steel drum sound like practically anything, and these are experts. As for the voices, I can't detect the Trini accent (and my in-laws are Trinidadian).
To really hear the difference between the two albums, listen to their renditions of Schubert's "Ave Maria." Luces' version can't be mistaken for anything but pan. The Trinidad All Stars' rendition doesn't sound much like traditional pan at all.
Taken together, these two albums give an excellent overview of where pan has gone in the last half-century. Its versatility is amazing.

BRAND NEW song by Shaggy n Alison Hinds the mash up riddim,
Shaggy is the name of, at least, two artists.
1, Shaggy (born October 22, 1968, in Kingston, Jamaica as Orville richard Burrell), is a Jamaican reggae artist who takes his nickname from Scooby-Doos companion (possibly from the similarity of their first names). He is especially notable for his distinctive sub-baritone voice.
His family immigrated to the United States and they settled in the neighborhood of Flatbush, Brooklyn, located in New York City, New York, USA.
In 1988, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served during Operation Desert Storm during the Persian Gulf War.
Born in England, ALISON and her mom moved to Barbados when she was 11 years old. After graduating from high school ALISON joined Square One, a Soca band made up of long time friends. Square One toured non-stop, playing everywhere from bars, hotels and eventually bigger venues throughout the Caribbean. ALISONs first hit with Square One was 1996s Ragamuffin, which won the Road March during the Barbados Carnival. The next year she repeated that victory as well as winning The Party Monarch, with "Twister"; making her the first woman in Barbados to capture both titles. ALISON recorded eleven albums with the band, including their debut Full Bloom. The CD was huge internationally and featured the 1 single "Faluma. Square One was at the peak of their popularity and so was ALISON, who was increasingly in demand also as a solo act.
In 2004, after getting married and having a daughter, ALISON decided to take a temporary leave from a grueling six years on the road. The break allowed ALISON to see her career in a new light and soon realized that going solo would be a good creative move that allowed her to determine own schedule.
Eighteen months after her hiatus, ALISON went solo and was instantly embraced by her fans, enabling her to take her dynamic live show worldwide, touring throughout the U.S., Europe, Canada and the Caribbean. The immediate acceptance confirmed ALISONs belief that her decision was fated and what she was destined to achieve. So too was the recording of her first solo CD. Everything I have done has been working towards this. To have the opportunity to make my own album and bring my music to my fans without watering down my sound or compromising what I am or SOCA is. Nothing makes me happier as an artist to know that I am bringing joy to new fans all over the world.

Raymond Ramnarine - RUM -2008
Dil-E-Nadan Indian Orchestra is from Trinidad
Raymond Ramnarine - Leader, Arranger, Vocalist
Raymond started his music career at the tender age of 9 years. His love for Indian music has grown tremendously, ever since the early days of Dil-E-Nadaan. In 1985 and 1988 he toured Canada with Dil-E-Nadaan. In 1989 he composed the test-piece "Dostaana" for Saaj Sammelan. Raymond started his 'singing' career then and won the Nationwide Duet Singing Competition together with Saraswatie Maharaj.
In 1991 he toured Jamaica and entered Mastana Bahar and attained 1st place in the Preliminaries and Semi Finals, and 2dn place in the Gtand Final. Also appeared that year at the Indian Cultural Pageant to serenade the queens.
Raymond is today regarded as our most electryfying stage performer. He continues to attract endless attention whenever he performs and is still regarded as our heartrob. The band has just returned from a tour of Holland and Raymond was as usual the pick of the artists amongst many all over the world. He is looking forward to the Father's Day Spectacular with a performance that will have patrons talking for weeks about the event.

Rennie Ramnarine
Rennie Ramnarine learned to play the Drum Machine, Trumpet, Syntersizer, Guitar, and Bass Guitar by himself . He went to music school to learn to play the trumpet and to learn to read and write music. He has been playing music for the past 10 years, and played music for Hari Om Sharan and Nandani Sahran. Also Salima Mohammed of Dam Dama Dam fame and also artists from New York, India and Jamaica. He has already performed in New York, Toronto, Montreal, Jamaica, Miami, Orlando etc.
Helped in the arrangement of the Saaj Sameelan composition, entitled Dostana which was composed by his father, Mr. Ramnarine 'Tole' Moonilal, leader of the Dil-E-Nadann Indian Orchestra. Sang on Indian Variety and was a finalist on Mastana Bahar. Rennie has just returned from a successful tour of the USA - New York, Miami and Orlando. He as also just released a brand new cassette 'New Image'.
The music was done and some songs rearranged by Raymond, richard and Rennie himself. The songs were selected by Rennie's father and mother.
Rennie currently plays rhythm, lead guitar and bass guitar and is also one of the lead singers with the Dil-E-Nadaan Indian Orchestra of Gasparillo. He plans to further his studies, academically and also in music and with his singing. He is very grateful to his parents for the guidance, encouragement, support, love and understandings. They are very proud and in turn Raymond, richard and Rennie hopes to continue this tradition and would like to thank other members of the Dil-E-Nadan for all their support.
richard Ramnarine
Meet the baby of the talented Ramnarine family - richard. Just like his illustrious brothers Raymond and Rennie - musician - singer and oh-well the girls go berserk for him.
richard joined the band in 1990 as a Dholak and Tabla player. He received formal training from Roby Rooplal for about one year. In 1993 he expanded his role to include all percussion instruments and the rhythm machine. richard is a player of the nineties synchronizing the eastern and western rhythms with such ease and perfection.
Elder brother Raymond remembers heckling richard that he should follow his brothers not only as musicians but he should take up singing and he did - but fully aware of the standards set by his brothers used to hide and rehearse, in fact he made his public debut in 1995 at the annual Valentine Spectacular singing behind his instruments still shy but very effective.
In 1998 at Queens Hall and Union Park Complex, richard for the first time took the microphone and sang at the front of the Band.
He is an important link in the Dil-E-Nadaan Orchestra. His mission id to expand his capabilities, with the help of Raymond and Rennie with the keyboards and guitars. His idols not unexpectedly are his father who he adores and brothers Raymond and Rennie who he credits with teaching him all he knows. He proposes also to pursue courses in computer technology which he hopes to incorporate within the band.
richard today handles the arrangements of the band for their many engagements including Tours.

.DENISE BELFON
She's now rated as One of the Caribbean's Hottest Artistes. Known to her fans as "Saucy Wow" for her energetic, scintillating performances, she has also earned the titles of Soca Diva and Caribbean Soca Dancehall Queen.
Her stunning stage act and music has been seen and heard by audiences throughout the Caribbean, across North America, even across the Atlantic in London, wherever the Caribbean diaspora can be found. Over the years she has also become a favourite with the US College circuit. Just plug her name into any search engine on the Internet, you are guaranteed to get over 700 hits.
With her long awaited debut album scheduled to be released in November 2004, it is without a doubt that she is poised to take the world by storm. Indeed, the time has come to show the world what Denise 'Saucy Wow' Belfon is all about.
Denise Ann Sinoda Belfon was born on November 23, 1968 in Trinidad and Tobago. As a young girl in school, she was a football player, and was even offered a scholarship to Howard University to join the all Girls football team. However, an injury at the time prevented her from taking up the opportunity.
Denise's other love from an early age was the arts. She has been singing since the age of 9, and has also been a dancer and a model. When she was not in the spotlight, Denise taught gymnastics at the Belmont Junior Secondary school and at the YMCA.
In 1990, Denise was discovered by the bandleader of Roy Cape. She started singing professionally with the band Black Sheep, before moving on to Sound Revolution. Her first solo recording was the soca hit "Ka Ka Lay Lay".
Since then, Denise has gone on to become the most forceful female solo act in the Caribbean, having recorded a string of hit singles: Hard Wuk", "De Jammette", "Saucy Baby", and "Indian Man", that continue to draw frenzy from audiences and partygoers across the Caribbean and in the diaspora.
These songs and many others have earned Denise the rank as one of the Caribbean's top talents.
"After I started with the band Black Sheep, I was encouraged by the performances of Super Blue and Denise Plummer to pursue a solo career. I would also say that Aretha Franklin, Billie Halliday and Mahalia Jackson have been my musical influences since I started in this business. Their work has always intrigued me."
