Mister Bush and Mister Gore
Mass confusion in Florida

Fay-Ann triumphs at Soca Monarch
Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez made history on Friday night at the National Stadium as she became the first woman to win the Soca Monarch, Groovy Soca Monarch and the bmobile Peoples Choice.
Singing in position No 7 in the Groovy Soca Monarch competition, Lyons-Alvarez danced onto the stage dressed as a Dame Lorraine to render her popular Heavy T Bumper and just worked the song.
During the performance she brought on contestants from the Miss Big and Beautiful Competition as well as the renowned Calypso Rose.
The crowd was moved. She paid special respect to the queen of calypso by inviting the entire crowd at the Hasely Crawford Stadium to sing to Rose before commanding them to wine their bumpers. Rose took full advantage of that and sent the crowd wild. It was an impregnable performance.
In the Power Soca Monarch Lyons-Alvarez, dressed in black and blue, belted out her song Meet Superblue as she again paid tribute, this time to her father, Austin Superblue Lyons who danced around on the stage next to his daughter, hugging and kissing her as she performed.
She then sent the crowd in a frenzy when she introduced them to her baby by putting the microphone to her belly and a child-like voice singing a verse to her song was heard.
After that, it was quite clear that she had the support of everyone in the venue as they chanted Fay-Ann, Fay-Ann in unison for over five minutes, demanding an encore.
Defending champion Bunji Garlin, who placed second, showed support for his wife when he told the audience during his performance he was only there to have fun and to ensure that Iwer George placed third as his wife was already the winner of the night.
Iwer George who came out in a red suit finished off with a red bow tie, performed his song Ready with a stunning stage presentation complete with dancers and large costumes, earning him third place in the competition. Rain threatened to interrupt the show during the Power Soca Monarch segment of the competition but it did not stop Blaxx from giving his all as he performed Tusty and captured fourth place.
Last years Groovy Soca Monarch winner, Shurwayne Winchester placed second in that category with his powerful performance of his song Make it Yours with the help of international reggae artiste Maxi Priest.
Also impressing the large crowd and the judges was Benjai, who sang Drunk Again without any large stage presentation.
He came in third in the Groovy Soca Monarch followed by fourth placed Zoelah from St Vincent who sang Wine Up on Me with the help of sexy male dancers, much to the delight of the female audience.
Hunter, who performed his big hit Jep Sting sent the crowd wild when he introduced his fellow artistes, Anil Bheem, Drupatee and Ravi B to sing with him.
Earlier, the show once again started an hour late despite the assurances that things would be different this year. The promised 1 am finish time never came true as the show continued until after 3 am in the morning.

Neeshan D Hitman Prabhoo
- Whole Day Liming
Neeshan Prabhoo has been slowly rising over the last five years. This year, the 30-year-old from Todds Roads, Central, takes aim at the crown with Whole Day Liming, a song that is also called trouble. Trudy Parboo, his publicist, said the song was written by Prabhoo and speaks about a man liming all day and decides to run away from stress after a family argument. Parboo said DHitman has been to the finals in 2008 with Drunk and Married, a song he recorded with Dile-e-Nadan.
DHitman also appeared on the big stage in 2005 and 2007. Doh Hold Me Back was his first chutney song that was recorded in 1997. Prabhoo took a break from singing and recorded his most sought-after tune, More Rum For Me, better known as Listen Mr Shanka in 2004.

Rikki Jai & Dil - E - nadan - Jai Ke Parie
Rikki Jai, 44, has won the crown five times. This year he plans on taking it again with Jai Kay Parei, a song he said pays tribute to Trini women. Jai said the song does not contain derogatory lyrics about women but just praises to their beauty, He said he was confident. I am afraid of no one. Jai said at the end of the day the public will be the ones to judge what really was chutney soca.
Rikki Jai was born Samraj Jaimungal, the fifth child in an East Indian family of six in Friendship Village, San Fernando. Raised in the Hindu faith by a mother who spoke Hindi, Jai discovered a love of music and began performing with local Indian bands Triveni and Naya Andaz. His calypso career began in 1989 on the Spektakula Forum stage with a song by Gregory Ballantyne titled "Sumintra". The song about a East Indian woman who told her boyfriend about her preference of Soca over the Indian artist Lata Mangeshkar became an instant hit.
Many other hits would follow including, show me your motion (1990) and wine on a bumsee (1993). After 1993 Jai began performing and recording primarily in the Chutney Soca arena and hits such as Doolahin, Rosie Bilna and Jarah Lagehla propelled him into the International arena. Jai captured the Chutney Soca Monarch title in 1998/1999 and the National Chutney Monarch title in 1999/2000. In 2001 he tied for 1st place (with Bunji Garlin) for the Young King Title and in 2002 for the fourth time in five years, Rikki Jai was chosen Chutney Soca Monarch.
He is currently represented by Question Mark Entertainment -- a management camp that includes other respected artists such as Maximus Dan, Kes and Nadia Batson, and is in high demand for his energetic and charismatic performances all over the U.S. the U.K and beyond. Jai prefers to stay home when he is not performing. He told the Sunday Express in July 2000, When I leave the stage I tend to do family-oriented things. I don't like clubs and I don't like to party, I love movies and river limes. My big thing is renting a movie and just kicking back and staying close to those I have known all my life."
Raymond Ramnarine - Leader, Arranger, Vocalist
Raymond started his music career at the tender age of 9 years. His love for Indian music has grown tremendously, ever since the early days of Dil-E-Nadaan. In 1985 and 1988 he toured Canada with Dil-E-Nadaan. In 1989 he composed the test-piece "Dostaana" for Saaj Sammelan. Raymond started his 'singing' career then and won the Nationwide Duet Singing Competition together with Saraswatie Maharaj.
In 1991 he toured Jamaica and entered Mastana Bahar and attained 1st place in the Preliminaries and Semi Finals, and 2dn place in the Gtand Final. Also appeared that year at the Indian Cultural Pageant to serenade the queens.
Raymond is today regarded as our most electryfying stage performer. He continues to attract endless attention whenever he performs and is still regarded as our heartrob.

Denyse Plummer is a calypso singer from trinidad and Tobago. The blue-eyed daughter of a white father and black mother, she initially had trouble being taken seriously as a performer in a genre traditionally seen as Afro-Caribbean, but was eventually recognized as a leading calypso performerDenyse Plummer is always a burst of energy when she ascends the stage. She has been successfuly churning out hits after hits since her debut in 1986.
Before entering the calypso world however, Plummer was well known as a pop singer at intimate pubs and hotels throughout the country.
Her debut in calypso was bitter sweet since she found herself at the end of an unappreciative audience at Skinner Park who hurled scores of oranges and toilet paper rolls at her during a performance. But Plummer weathered the storm and now has many achievements to prove it, including multiple Calypso Queen titles.
She is the first female calypsonian to ever win the Young King competition and has made it to Calypso Monarch finals in 1988, 1989, 1991. But, more recently (in 2001) took home the coveted title for the first time.
Denyse Plummer is only the 3rd female ever to win in the history of the competition.
..................................................................This past Carnival season, Sally Sagram was a back up singer for the former Calypso Monarch Denise Plummer and she was the only chutney star featured in Ladies Night Out. An extremely talented singer who has travelled extensively, Sally is one of the most sought after chutney singers in the country.
She was on the forefront on the chutney arena with the Spread Pal Crew of St Helena. However, one year ago she parted ways with the band to pursue a solo career.
Going solo was my only option at the time. I had to increase my repertoire and include some pop, rock and R&B songs for my fans out there, she explained.

Hott NEW CHUTNEY MUSIC FROM trinidad.
Kenneth Salick - Radica (2008/9)
This is Kenneth Salicks first time to the finals and his third trip to the Chutney Soca Monarch competition. Salick, 46, of Sangre Grande, who has been scoring it big with Radica since the last quarter of 2008, entered the Chutney Monarch in 2006 with I Want To Cum, a song about a female Anglo-Saxon New Yorker who wants to visit T&T. In 2005 he gave the judges Foreign Used but it was not enough to get him to Skinner Park. Salick, a landscaper, turned his personal experience into Radica, his most successful song.
Salick said Radica was written about his failed marriage. However, Salick said he still speaks with his ex-wife from time to time and the two have a cordial relationship. He said there had been many replies to his song but the only one worth mentioning was She Had a Right to Leave and Go, that was performed by Rawytee Ramroop. Salick said he was working on a reply to Ramroops song that he plans to launch before the Carnival season ends .
He has been enjoying a successful season with Radica.
Kenneth Salick took the 2009 Chutney Soca Monarch title with his hit song "Radica", after commanding 11,625 text votes from a total of 60,000 votes received between 8 p.m. on Saturday night to 2 a.m. yesterday.
The stunned 46-year-old handyman, a father of seven, of Manzanilla, said the crown would give him the chance to put to music 108 songs he had written over the years.
"I have been waiting for a break like this for a long, long time," he said in a telephone conversation yesterday.
He beat out nine other finalists in the night-long Carnival celebration at Skinner Park, San Fernando, on Saturday night, to claim a prize of $200,000.
Salick used his life story in his own composition — forever changing his life.
He admitted he was shocked when his name was called on Saturday night at the end of the competition at Skinner Park in San Fernando.
He took some time to get on stage and openly cried as he accepted his prize money. In the new judging system, the people voted for the winner.
Salick wrote Radica 16 years ago when his wife (Radica) left him with their seven children.
In his song, he asks her why did she leave him.
The new Chutney Soca Monarch is a labourer who cuts lawns in his hometown of Sangre Grande.
He plans to use his winning purse to purchase a house for his children, whom he thanked for staying with him during the most difficult time in his life.
The winner was selected for the first time this year by text votes.
Southex Promotions chief executive officer George Singh said votes from phones were capped to ensure the voting was fair. He said only the first 10 text votes from any one phone were applied to the contestants' score.
Singh said, "More than 60,000 votes were received by bmobile for Saturday night's competition, which was decided for the first time by text voting."
The results, after being audited and verified by bmobile, were announced at approximately 2.45 a.m. yesterday before a packed house. Singh said the pubic was given the opportunity to pick a winner this year.
"Every year, for the past 13 years, there have been protests over the judges' decision, so we decided to try something new," he said.
The show, titled "Festival of the Stars", started at 8 p.m. with a 45-minute spectacular opening act featuring the Gayatones orchestra, Susan Mohip dancers and the N-9 dancers.
Ten leading bands provided music to a capacity crowd. The soca chutney competition started with wild card winner Asha Kamachee, wearing a black sari decorated with silver sequins. She was accompanied by a troupe of dancers and sang "Kaisay Saloni", which earned her fourth spot.
Five-times winner Rikki Jai " followed with "Jai Kay Paree" (salute to the girls). In a silver and white outfit with a white turban on his head, he filled the stage with colourful dancers in an outstanding display. Neeshan "Hitman" Prabhu took the stage alone, singing and dancing to "Take meh gul", then made way for Salick at number four position.
Salick wore white and with a sober expression went down on his knees to lament his fate at the hands of "Radica", singing "Why you leave me and go". Dancers highlighted the performance and made way for Soca Elvis in red paying tribute to the rainbow culture with his patriotic song "Luv up".
The competition continued after guest performances with Patch and Mastermind with "Rum and Roti", followed by Hunter, Denyse Plummer, Ravi Bissambhar and Synergy television chutney star Rajin Dhanraj with "Go Nah".
Night of the Stars also saw Alison Hinds and Drupatee singing "Roll up de Tassa".
The results were as follows:
1. Kenneth Salick
2. Ravi B
3. Hunter
4. Asha Kamachee
5. Rikki Jai
6. Patch and Mastermind
7. Neeshan 'Hitman' Prabhu

—The Drunkard of the Party or Dhoti and Love up
Michael Salloum, 45, better known in the music world as Soca Elvis, plans on launching one of his three top songs for C2K9 at the finals of the Chutney Soca Monarch. Salloum said it was a toss-up between The Drunkard of the Party or Dhoti and Love up. This is his third year to the finals. In 2007 he entered with Chutney Wine; in 2008 he placed third and won the Peoples Choice award with Monica. Salloum said being in the finals was a big achievement for him. He said the competition would be hot this year but he was in the event to enjoy himself and have a good time.
Andy Singh
It is quite amazing the kind of talent that continue to emerge in trinidad when you consider the absence of any institutions for grooming such talent. It is also quite amazing, the talent that comes from many families in our blessed land. I am sure you have heard of Ras Nancoo Singh, certainly one of our living legends in songs. Ras is also responsible of providing to trinidad and the world two brilliant sons Ian and Andy. Ian now resides in Toronto, Andy lives in trinidad and every weekend is in every nook and cranny entertaining his hordes of fans with his melodious voice.
Andy is a proud son of the little village known as Rambert situated just on the outskirts of San Fernando. He was born on the 28th of July 1969.He career began quite surprisingly only in 1991. In 1992 he was already a force to be reckoned with reaching the finals of the first ever Film and Chutney Finals. In 1994 he entered Mastana Bahar and reached the finals where he placed fourth. In his relatively short career he has performed with most of the top bands, Gayatones, D Rampersad and presently is the lead singer with the SSL MELOBUGZ Orchestra.
He has represented trinidad in several inter-national venues, Miami, New York, Washington, New Jersey, Toronto, Montreal and the Caribbean.
He is currently employed as a salesman with a leading Industrial firm Southern Supplies Limited as a marketing representative.
He is eternally grateful for the support and guidance that he received from his dad Ras, mom and his charming wife Sherry who supports him in all his endeavors. Andys inspiration comes from his three daughters- Ahalia, Selena and Selest. He adores his fans both here and abroad and cherishes their admiration. His mission is to bring the people together through song and is hoping that peace and unity prevails.
Andy is today one of the most sought after singers especially with the success of the album Klymax by his band Melobugz in which he renders most of the songs.

MR. SLAUGHTER-Spread the Love
If you have to know only one thing about Derek Pereira aka Mr. Slaughter (formerly Dawg E Slaughter), know that he is a Warrior.
Warrior - One who is engaged in or experienced in battle.
Born on May 28th 1976 life was never the easy road travelled for this San Juan Knight. Then known as "Dovie", he used music as a refuge from hardship --- a comfort in times of trouble. Coming from a family steeped in verse and rhyme (his father was a parang star), a young Slaughter turned to music at the age eleven. Music was to be his stronghold, a place inaccessible to any enemy.
He is a Combatant. Combatant - Engaging in armed strife.
Nothing is ever done by chance only by faith and it was not mere luck that Slaughter chose to go with his uncle to a basement party one night in Brooklyn. His ascension to a DJ was pre-determined. Blessing the mic with his gritty, audacious, spirited vocals, there was no turning back. Going from sound systems Black Syndicate and Sel Construction to creating his own DJ crew- the aptly named X-Caliber Disco- Slaughter fought his way to the top of the business. As a radio presenter for 96.1 FM he introduced trinidad and Tobago, subsequently the world, to the undeniable mixing power of X-Caliber. But once again the fight found him and Slaughter had to prove he was worthy of the airplay.
He is a Contender. Contender - To strive in opposition or against difficulties.
Smashing his way into the soca arena in 2001 on the Voodoo rhythm the provocative lyrics of Slaughter's "Millennium Wine" could not be denied. He was more than just a DJ, more than just a mic man, yet many didn't take him seriously. He's a one hit wonder many thought----they were wrong. Decimating 2002 with his most popular song to date, "Tic Toc" produced by Bajan producer, Peter Coppin, it was solidified. Slaughter bypassed being just another soca artiste, he was amongst the finest in the industry. The T&T Ragga Soca Composer of 2002 was here to stay.
Mr. SlaughterHe is a Vanquisher. Vanquisher - To defeat or conquer in battle.
"After fighting up as a soca artiste, I actually gave up as a writer," said Slaughter. The hiatus didn't last long. A secret unknown to many, Slaughter is quite the gifted lyricists. He penned the soul wrenching "A Cry for Peace" for two-time Calypso Monarch, Singing Sandra. The devastating "Trample" rhythm ruled the airwaves for 2004 Carnival. It even spurred a compilation CD in England named after Slaughter's song "Lif up Yuh Leg an Trample".
He is a Champion. Champion - One that is clearly superior or has the attributes of a winner.
Now an established and respected DJ, artiste, songwriter, producer and all-round entertainer, Slaughter is fighting his most harrowing battle to the date. His debut album "Bound 2 Represent" is welcoming the world into the life, the mind and the heart of Dawg E Slaughter known forthwith as Mr.Slaughter. If there is anything left to prove, then this is it. Songs like "Carnival (I Love U)" and "It's Not Easy" speak of the fight amongst promoters and artistes---the "backstabbing" that often takes hold of the soca industry. "What's My Name?" is a soca salsa jam, combining English with the language of T&T's close Latin neighbours. "Represent" the song is a patriotic hail to the red, white and black. Along with other tracks like "Con-Coc-Shun", "Ain't No Party" and "Taking Over"---"Bound 2 Represent" the album, is a defining moment for one of trinidad's hottest new stars. "Bound 2 Represent" ---- a triumph over struggle.
"I am bringing out music that comes from the heart and I hope people would appreciate it." - Mr. Slaughter.

Rikki Jai is ah trinidadian chutney-soca artiste born Samraj Jaimungal in Friendship Village, San Fernando.
The prince of soca chutney, his highness Rikki Jai. Samraj "Rikki" Jai is the most successful crossover entertainer in the world. He has won the Carib Soca Chutney Monarch competition too many times to count, and has been the first Indian performer to make his mark on the soca charts with many different hit tunes. Most recently, he's known for his super hit throughout the soca and chutney universe for his song, Mor Tor. Mor Tor was almost a road march contender for the 2004 carnival season and was so popular that superstar Machel Montano also teamed up with his highness to remix the song.
Rikki Jai is also known for his past super chart topers like Scorpion, Dulahin, de River Lime and the song he broke into the scene with, Sumintra. Rikki Jai is unlike all other artists as he was the first to brake down the barrier, and allow space for 'Indian" soca entertainers to be recognized on the same stage as all the other top artists, although to this day no one has been able to reach the level at which Rikki has achieved success. None the less, he's still and always will be the true Prince of Soca Chutney music.

Joel Levi Feveck aka Zan, is a multi talented young man, well recognized in the music fraternity for his songwriting skills and vocal ability to perform in various genres. Growing up in the twin island of trinidad and Tobago his love for music grew from childhood. He was groomed as a young boy in voice training by his mother and so from a very early age the foundation of his talent was well nurtured.
In 1998, at the age of 16 his career started in the music group "Relativity". Their appearances ranged from concerts and model shows to other types of ceremonies, where they performed the national anthem, ballads, calypsos, and such. After graduating high school in 2000, Zan moved on in search of new opportunities. The group "Fusion," was formed with childhood friend Keron Boodoosingh. Out of this came the comical tune "Doubles," which was a well received collaboration by the two. In the words of the artist, "this was an effort to expand my range and give vent to my natural expression."
As a songwriter, his talent speaks for itself and will continue to do so. His joy and pleasure stems from his ability to capture in song, the soul of life and on the other hand the satire of everyday trials and tribulations. This is exhibited in his writings of groovy soca, ballads and the undefined. This songwriter has composed:"Can't Wait" sang by H2O Flow, "Energy" sang by Tony Prescott & Surface, "Love Somebody" and "Wine and Bend Over" sung by Destra and Shal respectively. These songs have helped the artist travel through the shallow waters in his life, to deeper waters where the sharks and icons swim.
Beyond the shores of trinidad Zan recorded Hard to Say Goodbye with French artiste Flow Fiji in early 2001. He hoped to continue to add many more knots like this onto his belt in this life. The popular song "Same Band," produced by Chasau and written in collaboration with Shal Marshall, was yet another such knot on his belt. Committed to making his mark in the industry, Zan continued to demonstrate his talent. In 2005, the hit song "Watching Woman" produced by Chinese Laundry was a hit track on the number 1 radio station's Soca Switch. This song was a true illustration of Zan as the man on the street who loves to watch the legs of women as they walk by. One could say like many Scorpio men, this artist enjoys the art of understanding and knowing a woman!
Zan's journey in music started in his primary days and has followed him to adulthood. This gave him the inspiration to write "Heart of a Man" which he did in collaboration with the most internationally known soca artist Machel Montano. His peers were not surprised when he followed up by writing "Always Be" commonly known as "Have You Ever Been in Love. This was produced as a duet, which he sang alongside Patrice Roberts, and was the beginning of a growing friendship with the talented vocalist.
Other recognized accomplishments for the artist include the winning of Pan Song of the year for 2006 "Colors Again" and the second place winner in the Groovy Soca Monarch competition with his collaboration song "Always Be" sang as a duet with Patrice Roberts. The year 2006 was a phenomenal one in his life it heightened his personal satisfaction and public recognition.
Life's path has brought him to 2007, where he has since recorded and written "Till Tomorrow (Hold Me Close)" with Patrice Roberts and "All We Need" as another solo rendition. The artist feels blessed to have been awarded the opportunity to travel the world with Machel Montano and Xtatik. From the sold out shows in Madison Square Garden (New York) to the World Cup in Germany, his dream to be versed in world cultures and identities in an attempt to expand his writing experiences, was further realized on completion of his European World Tour. His mind, body, and soul were well exposed, and with Zan's positive reception, we await to see its impact on our musical culture.

sugar Aloes-Born Michael Anthony Osuna, this controversial calypsonian hails from Santa Cruz,
sugar Aloes-Born Michael Anthony Osuna, this controversial calypsonian hails from Santa Cruz, trinidad. He started his schooling at Nelson Street Boys R.C. then went on to Mucurapo High School. One of his earliest mentors was Hollis Liverpool, better known as the Mighty Chalkdust. Chalky was Michaels schoolteacher then later his choirmaster at Nelson Street Boys. Michael Osuna began his singing career in 1979 at the Young Beginners Tent. He now lives in Arouca and is married, describing himself as a family man.
Facts and figures are cold things however. They cannot begin to describe the man, his life and his art. Michael is best known to his friends, fans and foes as Sugar Aloes. He is the reigning 2002 Calypso Monarch of trinidad and Tobago.
From the moment he took the stage at the Grand Savannah on the night of Dimarche Gras 2002 he was a crowd favourite. His first song "Contribution" told of our need and responsibility to mentor and shape our children, heart, body and soul. I caught up with Sugar Aloes one evening, several weeks after his resounding victory. He was doing back to back performances in New York then on to another full slate of appearances in Toronto, Canada.
Aloes and I spoke of the continuing trend of West Indian parents to come abroad seeking a better life while leaving their children behind. "How can you mind your child from a barrel?" says Aloes. "You cant pack morals in a barrel to send home. You cant pack values in a barrel. No matter where I am, or what Im doing, I make time for my children."
There is an ever-increasing flow of West Indians leaving their home for the mythical milk and honey advertised in foreign lands. Sugar Aloes made himself very clear on his position, saying "If you cant make it where you born, you cant make it anywhere. Youre going from job to job here. Whats the difference?" The breakdown in family is a source of heartfelt distress to Aloes and he vows to continue the lyrical laments to his nation.
Sugar Aloes second song on the night of his resounding victory was "Jubilation Time" (chorus: please Mr. Panday, make way for de Balisier) a well-received tribute to the PNM (Peoples National Movement)s return to political power in trinidad and Tobago. The Balisier is the icon flower of the PNM. "Jubilation Time" bore the style of the late Lord Kitchener, a hero of the 2002 Monarch. The calypso was done in a larveau (pronounced lav whey) cadence, a simple but time honoured melody of the art of political commentary in song.
But there is a method to the bittersweet madness. Sugar Aloes life is predicated on certain fundamental beliefs and the facts and figures begin to pale in the revealing light of these convictions. Aloes and I joked a bit as we talked about his family life and childhood. He told me hed prefer not to mention how many children he has. He laughed and said, "People tended to react with "Oh goooode!" But there was no joking when we spoke on the topic of his music and his lyrics. His insightful grasp of life in trinidad & Tobago came through clearly as we talked about where he saw himself in years to come, what his calypso commentaries meant to him and more especially, what it meant to his people.
"I am a vicious commentator." He said. "The poor mans representative. We continue to be misled and Im not going to stay quiet about it." Aloes went on to explain that the poor man had a voice only once every five years and he has taken it upon himself to speak out on his behalf on the injustices and unfair practices of those in authority. While some of his fellow calypsonians may pander solely to the bump and grind of popular soca rhythms, Sugar Aloes plans on keeping his calypsos on task, tough and unwavering in his passion for improvement in the socio-political and economic situation in trinidad and Tobago. A staunch PNM advocate, Sugar Aloes promises his words will always be controversial but there will never be a question as to his loyalties and sense of responsibility to his homeland.
